Make Your Voice Heard at the First UGM of Term!
Union General Meeting (UGM) - TOMORROW Thursday 9th October, 1pm, Old Theatre
This is the first UGM of the term, and guarantees to mix banter and serious debate!
The UGM, which happens every Thursday at 1pm in the Old Theatre, can be attended by all students, where anyone can propose motions - ideas that they want to become the campaigns of the Students’ Union - and vote to change the direction of LSE. LSE is the only university in the country with anything like it - this is what LSE is all about!
The following motions are up for debate:
1. Business Society Bailout
2. March on The City
3. Save LSE Nursery
4. Your Union - New Building, New Union
5. Sheikh Zayed Theatre - Return the Money, Change the Name
As well as that, we’ll be electing the UGM Chair, UGM Vice-Chair and ‘Keeper of the UGM’ (who gets a bell to ring and a cool costume!).
You won’t have any lectures or classes on at 1pm on a Thursday, because it’s clear for the UGM - so come along, debate, vote and change LSE for the better.
Think LSE students are poorly rounded individuals who know nothing about science or the arts? Think again: we’re through to the second round on TV quiz show University Challenge. To prepare our team of four clever cloggs for the big match, there will be a students versus faculty match on Wednesday, 1PM in the Old Theatre. The stellar academic lineup of Dick Hobbs, Janet Hartley, George Gaskell and Tony Travers will be put through their paces by our very own Jeremy Paxman, LSE Director Howard Davies.

The first week of the LSE Festival has flown by, and was enormous fun for everyone involved. Shami Chakrabarti kicked it off in style; despite the weather, the Village Fete and Silent Disco were a lot of fun; Wiley and Beardyman rocked the house at BOOM on Tuesday; the AU had a great day at Berrylands on Wednesday; the Graduate was packed; Freshers’ Fayre was glorious; and the first ever Fresh was heaving!
But it isn’t over yet. In fact, this week - Activities Week - is set to be even more action packed than the last!
Activities Week will see Society Annual General Meetings (AGMs, first meetings of the year where committees are elected), Campaigns Inductions and Media Group Inductions.
Look out for emails from Societies about their AGMs. The full list of Campaign and Media Group Inductions is as follows:
The LSE Festival is most definitely in full swing! Don’t forget to come to the last day of Freshers’ Fayre tomorrow to sign up to some of our 200 societies and 40 sports clubs.
Thanks to all the volunteers, staff and students who have made the Festival such a success so far. Here’s to another week… see you at Fresh!
The best student night in London is also the most popular. All advanced tickets have now sold out. Limited tickets available on the door - arrive early as the queues will be record breaking!
Due to overwhelming demand, we have expanded the venue for The Graduate tonight. £5 gets you entry into the Underground and the Quad, where you can enjoy the live music experience of Band Republic as well as Jazzbomb in The Underground.
Tickets are now on sale at http://tickets.lsefestival.com and in the Festival Hub (in The Quad, Basement, East Building).
We had an amazing start to the Festival. Yesterday, over 500 people turned up for the Welcome Reception with Shami Chakrabati, but we only had room for 300! Apologies to anyone who couldn’t get in.
Also, sorry to everyone who wasn’t able to get a goody bag: they were simply TOO popular! More are available in Clement House today.
Wednesday’s International Students’ Induction has changed venue. It is now in G108 (20 Kingsway) rather than the New Theatre. Time is still the same: 12:00-13:30.
