Volunteer for Orientation Festival 2009

Hello!  Thanks for showing an interest in being an official volunteer for LSE Students’ Union Orientation Festival 2009!  Being a volunteer over the Festival period is loads fun and a really fulfilling experience.  You’ll meet lots of people, help new students orientate themselves to LSE and London life, and pick up some great freebies as a thank you at the end of it all.  So if you’re an existing LSE student, and this sounds like something  for you, then read on to find out what’s available and information on how to apply.

When does it all happen?
The Festival itself will run from Sunday 27th September until Friday 9th October.  However, there will also be some activities starting as early as 18th September in preparation for the big fortnight.

What can I do as a volunteer?
There are loads of ways to get involved as a volunteer to suit your skills and the level of involvement you would like.  To give you an idea, some of the roles include:

• Packing goody bags in the run up to registration
• Stewarding of events
• Helping to sell tickets and promote events
• Staffing Students’ Union campaign stalls and other stands at Festival Fair
• Meeting and greeting external visitors
• Overseeing rooms and societies
• Runners – helping people move from section to section
• Staffing an information stall throughout the Festival
• Giving out leaflets and being a point of contact for new students on Houghton Street and around campus throughout the Festival
• Being a Festival representative in halls
• Helping new halls residents move in and settle in, offering information and advice
• Promoting and supporting events, whether Students’ Union events or halls specific

As you can see there are lots and lots of ways to get involved!  But this list is not exhaustive, so if you have any particular ideas for things that can be done, or things that you think you are really good at, be creative and let us know!

And what do I get out of it…?
….. other than a fun filled fortnight, of course?!

Even though you’ll be a volunteer, the Festival is still there for you to enjoy.  In order to make sure you get the best out of Festival 2009, and to say a big thank you for volunteering we will give you:

• A free Festival t-shirt
• Free entry for you and a friend to one of the nights of entertainment of your choice (but not the RAG Freshers’ Ball)
• The very first updates about the week – be the first to know about what’s going on!
• An invite to all volunteer focused events throughout the year

In order to make the best use our volunteers, we need a few important details from you.  Please provide us with the following:

• Your full name
• Your department
• A list of the societies you belong to
• An idea of the kind of volunteering opportunities you’d like to take up
• Your halls (if you live in them!)
• An idea of when you’ll be back in London before the start of term
